ELP-30, the most powerful Electron Beam furnace in the world, is installed in the town of Orsk. Its main equipment supplied by German manufacturers LEW Hennigsdorf and Von Ardenne Anlagentechnik was later complemented by that of Yuzhuralmash. The furnace design allows for metals and special alloys remelting under high vacuum by means of electron beam power. The complex is capable of producing steel, titanium and copper slabs and ingots. The ove-rall capacity of the furnace is 4500 tones of steel ingots with maximum weight of 40 tones each.
The furnace is equipped with the intermediate container (cold-hearth unit) for metal refining. The furnace enables to remelt lump material without extrusion and to feed in alloying materials in the process of blending. High range power adjustment allows to control solidification of the ingot. If necessary, certain materials can be removed from the hotmelt.
High vacuum enables to remelt materials, which acidize when heated in air (titanium, niobium etc.) The furnace is equipped with five electron beam guns, with maximum capacity 1200 kW each (the adjustable capacity range is 50-1200 kW), which back up each other.
If two guns fail simultaneously, the furnace continues working in normal operations mode. If the third gun fails, the furnace still keeps working and is capable to complete the melting process. From the environmental point of view, the furnace can be regarded as a safe and pollution-free melting facility.
