A Captain and his Boat

When Captain Dick Dunn was a boy living in North Dakota, he dreamed of the sea. Coming to Alaska, he found his home on "the Other Side," in Kachemak Bay State Park.

The Captain He's been navigating its waters for over 30 years now. That's longer than any other taxi captain in the area, so you know that you'll be transported safely and comfortably. Captain Dick believes you've got to stop and smell the sea cucumber. That's why every taxi ride includes a mini wildlife tour, weather permitting.

Captain Dick is Coast Guard Licensed to master vessels up to 50 tons, but prefers the personal experience of his Goldeneye.

When it comes to fishing, no one knows the Tutka Bay/ Sadie Cove area better than Captain Dick. He's fished these waters commercially for over 8 years: long lined for halibut with his son Jocean and fished for salmon and crab.

As a master boat builder, his expertise is sought after all over the Kachemak Bay area. Some 30 of his hand built wooden boats ply its waters. His water taxi, the Goldeneye is his pride and joy designed for a comfortable ride and easy wildlife viewing. This handcrafted boat seats a maximum of six passengers, so everyone gets the Captain's full attention whether fishing or touring the bay.

Twenty years ago the Captain built his home by hand in Little Tutka Bay from salvaged timber he milled at a neighbor's facility in Sadie Cove. Today he shares his home with his wife Marge, two children, and faithful dog Popcorn.
